What is it?
If you think the Ubisurfer is one of those new netbook, palm top, mini computer, things. You would be right… and wrong! Because the Ubisurfer mobile internet netbook has been designed with one particular purpose in mined. That purpose is allowing you to read this article… Ohhh… Aghhh.. No its not some fancy gizmo glasses, it has been designed to allow you to surf the internet, from virtually anywhere. It does this through a multitude of methods.
Firstly, you can link it up old school with an Ethernet cable (or USB) and access the web through the physical media of, wire. Secondly, it comes WiFi enabled allowing you to access the web through any WiFi hot spot. Finally, this clever little beast comes Sim Enabled with a 1 years subscription to Videophones 1800 surf package. This allows you to surf the net for 1800 minutes a month from anywhere that receives a mobile signal. This 1 year subscription is included in the price of the Ubisurfer and only costs £29.99 to renew for a second year.
The device itself measures in at a palm pleasing 2.21 x 13.8 x 3cm. This does not make it the smallest gadget on the market but it is impressive when you look at what it contains. The 7 inch screen displays at 800 x 480 pixels, the 128mb of ram makes surfing allot quicker and the 1 GB of onboard storage can be extended thanks to the external SD card slot. There is also 3 expansion USB ports, headphone and microphone jacks and a fully functioning QWERTY keyboard and track pad.
Why do I want it?
If you don’t like the internet, then this is probably not the gadget for you. However, if you like surfing the web and want to do it on the move, this could be the answer. We used to be restricted to using our mobiles or carrying our laptop and dongle around if we wanted to access the net while out and about.
Now the Ubisurfer allows us to access the internet, in proper IE browser mode, virtually anywhere in the world. Imagine being board on a train and you wanted to peruse GFM’s latest gadget review, not a problem with the Ubisurfer in your pocket. Off travelling around the world? Throw one of these in your rucksack and you will never have to look for an internet café again. Upload your new pictures and let everyone see what/who you are doing and how much fun you are having doing it.
You can also keep your social networking status (Facebook, Twitter) updated from anywhere that receives a mobile signal. Another huge bonus is that because the operating system is Linux based, you also can use and MS office style suit for spreadsheets/typing and use other onboard programs as well. This makes the Ubisurfer a lot more versatile than we expected making it quite an effective palmtop PC as well.
